What Are the Differences Between Boxing and BJJ?

There are some important differences between boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Let’s look at some of them.

  • History Differences

Boxing was first used as a sport in Ancient Rome. It may have existed before that, though. BJJ, on the other hand, came to Brazil in the early 1900s. So, boxing has been around for a lot longer.

  • Fighting Style Differences

As a striking sport, boxing only lets players use their fists to hit other players. In BJJ, players must throw their opponents and pin them to the ground.

  • Rules Differences

Boxing only lets people fight while standing up; fighting on the ground is not allowed. It is only possible to hit with closed fists aimed at the front of the body. If you can knock out your opponent, you win.

In BJJ, you can fight on the ground or while standing. You can’t punch or kick anyone. Instead, you win if you can keep your opponent from moving.

  • Popularity

Boxing has been around for a very long time. It’s still a favorite among martial artists and people who do it for fun.

Compared to boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a fairly new style. However, it has become very popular since the first UFC event many years ago. It is one of the martial arts that is growing the fastest.
